Self-Management Programs

What volunteer roles are there?

All Self-Management BC programs are delivered by peer volunteers. At this time, we have two opportunities open:

  • Coach for the Health Coach Program  - providing support by telephone, approximately 30 minutes once per week for a period of 13 weeks (3 months).
  • Leader for the Chronic Conditions Self-Management Program - delivering health education virtually or in-person, using an evidence-based scripted program, 2.5 hours once per week for 6 weeks.

Here is a comparison of the two opportunities.

Who can become a volunteer?

Any adult 19 years and older who is interested in supporting people with chronic conditions. Favourable volunteer attributes include:

  • Non-judgmental and open to new ideas
  • Responsible, respected and trustworthy
  • Committed to helping others
  • Willing to listen, learn new skills and be a healthy role model
  • Committed to the philosophy of the program
  • Proficient in both speaking and reading English

What are the benefits of becoming a volunteer?

You will:

  • Learn facilitation skills
  • Learn techniques and strategies you can use in your own life
  • Share in other people’s successes

You will be provided with thorough training and ongoing support from staff at Self-Management BC.

What is required?

Training requirements include:

  • Complete and submit the Application form
  • Participate in a personal telephone interview to assess suitability
  • Successfully complete the training (2 to 13 sessions depending on program).

Trainings are interactive and fun and are provided at no cost. Once trained, volunteers are asked to commit to coaching a participant or leading a workshop ideally within six months.

Please note: Trainings may be postponed or cancelled if a minimum number of people do not pre-register.
